Apply to be a Florida Youth Institute 2018 Counselor

The Florida Youth Institute (FYI) is a one-week residential summer program being offered July 15-20, 2018 and July 22-27, 2018 for up to 25 selected high school students per session. CALS is currently seeking applicants interested in serving as a Florida Youth Institute Counselor. Applicants may be undergraduate or graduate students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), OR recent graduates of CALS. Applications will be accepted until March 15, 2018, or until all positions are filled.

Counselors:
  • Will be compensated $1,500 for the two-week period.
  • Will receive room and board between July 13-27, 2018.
  • Are expected to be fingerprinted and complete the necessary paperwork for employment and working with minors in a timely manner (deadline will be forthcoming).
  • Report for FYI on Friday, July 13 at 1 p.m. and will be on duty through Friday, July 27 at 5 p.m.
  • Can expect a break Friday, July 20 at 5 p.m. until Sunday, July 22 at 9 a.m. (Counselors may still stay in provided accommodations during that time if desired.)
  • Will be on call 24 hours a day for the week.
  • Should not plan to take Summer B or Summer C courses, unless it is an online course and the applicant feels the online coursework can be completed after active camp hours (after 10:30 p.m.).
If selected for an interview, students will be contacted by a CALS Dean's office representative to schedule a 15-minute interview that will take place on April 2, 2018. Students will be expected to present a 5-minute example of an engaging educational activity or icebreaker. A total of 8-10 counselors will be selected from the pool of applicants.

CUASHI Summer Institute - June 10 – July 28, 2018

Support is still available for a few more students at the 2018 CUAHSI Summer Institute at the National Water Center. This unique event provides graduate students an opportunity to work with their colleagues and some outstanding hydrologists and hydrologic modelers. Student participation is fully supported, including travel. Please see more here.

This application period only will be open for 1 week - complete applications must be received by 11:59 pm ET on Sunday, February 4, 2018.

The UF Social Justice Summit: For the Gator Good -Allyship: Identify, Interact, & Impact

Join us for the second biennial Social Justice Summit to cultivate interdisciplinary and cross-cultural interactions in order to create a society that is equitable and inclusive where all members can be physically and psychologically safe. Let’s make a difference together For the Gator Good.

The 2018 SJS will be held on January 26 & 27, 2018 at the J. Wayne Reitz Union on the campus of the University of Florida. This year’s theme: Allyship: Identity, Interact, & Impact will explore questions related to Allyship in the work of Social Justice.

Keynote Speakers will include Dr. Zulema Valdez and Mr. Tim Wise.

Dr. Valdez is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Merced. Her work focuses on U.S. race relations, social, and economic inequality, and group disparities in health and wellness.

Tim Wise is an anti-racism activist and writer. His work focuses on bringing awareness about internalized elements of racist thinking in the U.S., arguing that, as a society, we can challenge this racist thinking and be taught to believe in equality.

UF Water Institute's 6th Biennial Symposium

Feb. 6-7 | J. Wayne Reitz Union

The Symposium brings together individuals from a broad range of disciplines and organizations to explore water issues from multiple perspectives. The 2018 Symposium will focus on current water use, conservation, restoration, and adaptation efforts and challenges while envisioning new ways of sustaining our water systems.

CALS Student Awards Application Open

Applications for college student awards are now open! Awards are available for CALS seniors, juniors, and graduate students. Winners and finalists are honored at the annual CALS banquet in April.

Applications are due Feb. 7 and can be found here. Give your references enough time to complete the required letters of reference as those letters are due Feb. 7 as well - no exceptions.

Scholarship applications for the 2018-2019 academic year are now open! Visit our website to fill out this quick application. If you currently have a scholarship, you must fill out an application in order to qualify for your renewal. Applications are due April 1 for graduate students.
