American Water Resources Association - FIRST MEETING

The first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 2nd at 6pm in Frazier Rogers 122 (see our revamped flyer, attached). Our speaker will be Rick Kilby. He has helped us out a lot in the past, creating our logos and whatnot, so it would be great if we could have a big crowd for him. As always, we will play the whole door-opening game for those of us who don't have building access after hours. Tell your friends!

If by some nigh unimaginable set of circumstances you haven't heard of the AWRA state and national meetings coming up in September and November, respectively, check out the flyers below. Contact Natalie (nataliegnelson@ufl.edu) or Emily (etaylor21@ufl.edu) if you have questions and/or you plan on attending. The applications for funding are due SOON so be sure to take a look at that.

FIDEF – Florida Institute for the Development of Engineering Faculty

Whether you are just starting your PhD studies, or are well into your dissertation research, some of you might be considering the question – Do I want to explore an academic career in engineering upon graduation? If so, we have a course for you!

FIDEF – Florida Institute for the Development of Engineering Faculty – is a 1 credit course offered by Dr. Warren Dixon this Fall 2015. The course covers all aspects of academic life as an PhD engineer.
Please give serious consider to taking this additional 1-credit course, even if you simply wish to just explore the option. The course is presently listed as EMA 6936, but will be moving in the future to the course offerings of the Engineering Leadership Institute.
Program Goal:
Enhance placement of COE graduates in academic institutions as tenure track faculty
Desired Program Outcomes:
  • Provide graduate students with an understanding of their career options
  • Help graduate students clearly understand the qualifications that academic institutions are seeking in new faculty, and how to obtain and document such qualifications.
  • Give graduate students a clear understanding of the tenure and promotion requirements at academic institutions, and help them prepare to meet those requirements when they are appointed to a college faculty
Participation: The Institute will offer developmental opportunities to interested graduate students who possess the interest and ability to pursue careers in academia.

Structure: Students participating in the program must register for a 1 credit seminar course in the Fall semester for EMA 6936 - Dixon.

Part One: Seminar Series
This is a year long program composed of several two hour brown bag lunch meetings, The lunch meetings will take place on Thursdays from 11:45-1:40. Attendance at these meetings is mandatory for students enrolled in EMA 6936.

Part Two: Candidate Shadowing When possible, participants in the program will be allowed to shadow a faculty candidate during their interview period at UF. This shadowing will consist of being present during any open forum discussions such as teaching or research plan presentations. Participants will also be allowed to attend subsequent meetings of the search committee at which the interviewed candidate is discussed and at the faculty meeting where the candidate is discussed.

GatorGradCare Enrollment Deadline: 9/14/15!

The GatorGradCare health insurance enrollment deadline is September 14, 2015. GatorGradCare is a health insurance plan provided exclusively to graduate assistants, teaching assistants, and research assistants on appointment with the University of Florida. GatorGradCare enrollment is not automatic.
All eligible students, including returning graduate assistants previously covered by GatorGradCare, must submit a 2015-2016 enrollment by the September 14th deadline if they would like to be included under the plan for the upcoming academic year. No enrollments can be accepted after the enrollment deadline.

Important: Students using UF wifi to enroll may need to enable Gatorlink VPN in order to access the secure enrollment site.

GatorGradCare enrollees’ eligibility is evaluated by the Benefits Office following the fall drop/add period that ends on Aug. 28. Departments must complete all appointment processes, enter ePAF transactions and allow time for each level of approver to approve the appointment prior to Aug. 28 in order for GatorGradCare enrollees’ insurance coverage to be activated as quickly as possible. Delays and errors in loading GA jobs, letters of appointment, and tuition waivers will delay insurance coverage for the GatorGradCare enrollees. Please notify the Benefits Office by emailing gabenefits@admin.ufl.edu if your department is aware of delays in processing job data for your Graduate Assistants.

The GatorGradCare plan eligibility requirements, coverage effective dates, and other related information can be found at http://hr.ufl.edu/benefits/health-insurance/gatorgradcare/ Questions regarding GatorGradCare enrollment or eligibility should be directed to the UF Benefits Office at gabenefits@admin.ufl.edu or (352) 392-0003.
