FIDEF – Florida Institute for the Development of Engineering Faculty

Whether you are just starting your PhD studies, or are well into your dissertation research, some of you might be considering the question – Do I want to explore an academic career in engineering upon graduation? If so, we have a course for you! 

FIDEF – Florida Institute for the Development of Engineering Faculty – is a 1 credit course offered by Dr. Warren Dixon this Fall 2015. The course covers all aspects of academic life as an PhD engineer.
Please give serious consider to taking this additional 1-credit course, even if you simply wish to just explore the option. The course is presently listed as EMA 6936, but will be moving in the future to the course offerings of the Engineering Leadership Institute.
Program Goal: 
Enhance placement of COE graduates in academic institutions as tenure track faculty 
Desired Program Outcomes: 
  • Provide graduate students with an understanding of their career options 
  • Help graduate students clearly understand the qualifications that academic institutions are seeking in new faculty, and how to obtain and document such qualifications. 
  • Give graduate students a clear understanding of the tenure and promotion requirements at academic institutions, and help them prepare to meet those requirements when they are appointed to a college faculty
Participation: The Institute will offer developmental opportunities to interested graduate students who possess the interest and ability to pursue careers in academia.

Structure: Students participating in the program must register for a 1 credit seminar course in the Fall semester for EMA 6936 - Dixon.

Part One: Seminar Series
This is a year long program composed of several two hour brown bag lunch meetings, The lunch meetings will take place on Thursdays from 11:45-1:40. Attendance at these meetings is mandatory for students enrolled in EMA 6936.

Part Two: Candidate Shadowing When possible, participants in the program will be allowed to shadow a faculty candidate during their interview period at UF. This shadowing will consist of being present during any open forum discussions such as teaching or research plan presentations. Participants will also be allowed to attend subsequent meetings of the search committee at which the interviewed candidate is discussed and at the faculty meeting where the candidate is discussed.
