Communicating About Agricultural and Natural Resources Research (Listed in Course Schedule as Special Topics: COMMUNICATING ANR SCI)
Spring 2021 – Online, Asynchronous
Instructor: Dr. Lisa Lundy, Professor, Agricultural Education and Communication
Course Description: Outreach to the public is one of the most important ways in which significant outcomes and impacts of research can be demonstrated in measurable, quantifiable terms. In addition to developing expertise in their science, researchers increasingly need to be able to convey its significance to policy makers, funders and the general public. This course will focus on the planning and production of written, digital, and visual instructional and communication materials designed to support outreach programs in the sciences. Graduate students in scientific disciplines will learn to think critically and creatively, with respect to developing outreach programs to engage the public about the importance of science. Students will learn how public engagement and outreach can be used to convey the public value of their own work.

NASA DEVELOP internship opportunity
NASA DEVELOP is under the Capacity Building Program within NASA’s Applied Sciences Program. NASA DEVELOP conducts feasibility research projects which use NASA satellite data to answer current environmental questions for our partner organizations while providing opportunities for professional and personal growth for our participants. Each year we have three "terms" that consist of 10 intense weeks of research and analysis that is conducted by a team of current students (undergraduate or graduate), recent graduates (undergraduate or graduate), and early/transitioning career professionals. Teams partner with professional organizations, offering unique opportunities for networking with these partners as well as with NASA scientists and advisors. Projects fall into one or two of the eight National Application areas, and are team led providing participants the opportunity to grow their leadership, professional, and technical skill sets. Many focuses of study can benefit from the program as they cultivate professional skills while they learn how to use GIS and remote sensing techniques. In the past, we have had successful applicants from a number of fields, such as Geography, History, Biology, Computer Science, Earth System Science, Anthropology, and Political Science.
Responsibilities will include: literature review, data processing and analysis, and production of creative and written deliverables, such as a technical report, presentation, and video. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial, is not required for acceptance. This is a multi-disciplinary opportunity for all those interested in Earth science.
Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. Days of the week are flexible, but applicants should be able to commit to 20 – 29 hours per week during the spring term. The position is paid on an hourly basis that is determined by education level and location of work.

Finding a System That Works for You
A Virtual Workshop With Dr. Vernetta Williams
Thursday, September 17, 2020

Post Doc Position - IRREC
Post-doctoral associate for research project “Evaluation of Potential HLB Tolerant Grapefruit Rootstock/Scion Combinations in the Indian River District of Florida”
The UF/IFAS IRREC Ferrarezi Citrus Hort Lab is seeking a self-driven individual with a very strong background in variety performance evaluations. The position offers an opportunity to work with a grower-driven, replicated field variety trial in 20+ sites across different counties in Florida. The ideal candidate should have experience working with experimental design, data collection, analysis, and interaction with growers in large-scale field trials. The objective of the project is to plant large-scale field trials of some of the most promising experimental grapefruit scion/rootstock combinations that may have more tolerance to HLB and monitor them over the next years. For this proposed project, a total of seven scions and six rootstocks (42 combinations) will be evaluated on 20+ representative 2-acre block trials located within the Indian River District and other growing regions. Data collected will include:
Tree growth measurements (trunk diameter, tree height, and tree width).
HLB incidence, Canopy thickness and Canopy color using rating scales.
Sampling for CLas testing by PCR.
Tree appearance will be documented photographically.
Once trees are mature (which is probably not going to happen in the first three years), fruit yield and quality data will be collected each season.
Full records of all caretaking (nutrition/pesticides etc.) and soil types.
Job Requirements:
PhD in Horticulture, Agronomy or any related field required
Driver’s License
Preferred Qualification:
- Knowledge of variety trials and ability to design experiments to test relevant research hypothesis

A message from the Dean
Along with you, I mourn the tragic loss of the life of George Floyd that occurred in Minneapolis. While this particular horrific murder was captured by video, it is not an isolated event. I have lived in this country for my entire life. Sixty-two years of time after time after time seeing people of color treated as less than full and equal citizens, as less than human. Each publicly acknowledged episode of brutality bringing a cycle of outrage, of pain, of promises to do better. And each time we go back to our homes and jobs and families, and nothing really changes. And then the cycle begins again. After years of seeing the same suffering I must confess that at times I despair that we will ever escape this horrible replay.
In spite of the temptation to give in to despair, we must sustain hope for something better. I am lifted up by Dr. King's observation that "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Every positive step we take to break this cycle bends the arc toward justice a little bit more. Rather than accept that change is not possible, we must, finally, refuse to accept the unacceptable.
In 1981, there was only one African American faculty member in Stanford’s college of engineering, and he was my PhD advisor. I saw the many ways, some subtle and some not so, that he was treated differently. He and I often talked about the hope that someday things would change, and people of color and women would be represented and welcome in our profession. Since that time, I have been told repeatedly that engineering and computer science simply cannot be diverse because there aren't enough women and people of color interested in the field to really make an impact. To my greatest delight and admiration, our efforts are proving them wrong. Though we still have a very long way to go, I do believe that we have made progress in bringing more diversity to our community. In fact, our college is becoming an example to others that progress can be made. For all of my colleagues who have brought us to this point, you have earned my greatest respect.
Even though we are becoming a more diverse community, we still have much work to do in creating a more inclusive environment. We must chip away at the barrier of exclusion and contribute to the creation of a community where everyone, regardless of color, ethnicity, religion or gender identity, can be represented and achieve to their highest potential. As a community, we must begin by reaffirming our values and respect for human rights and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA). It is through our IDEA values and respect for the human rights of all people that we can make a positive difference. The Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering values a diverse and inclusive community. It is integral to success in every area of our college. As a community, we are committed to individual and group empowerment, inclusion, and the elimination of discrimination.
Our commitment must be strategic and long term. Such commitment benefits everyone and requires everyone. We are putting words into action by empowering diversity and inclusion liaisons in each department to facilitate IDEA discussions with faculty, staff, and students. The liaisons meet monthly on the HWCOE IDEA committee led by two Associate Deans, Dr. Taylor and Dr. Nishida, who serve as Campus Diversity Liaisons representatives on the University CDL team led by UF’s Chief Diversity Officer. I encourage each of you to reach out to your department IDEA liaisons to share ideas and to be heard about how to increase inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.
Around the country we are seeing expressions of frustration, fear and anger about injustice and inequity in our society. We must listen to them even though the message may be shocking or painful. Real change starts with real listening. It is tempting to lose hope in the possibility for progress, but I have seen the progress that many of you have already fostered in our college. Together we CAN bend the moral arc toward justice.
With hope,
Cammy
